Uses of Flaxseed
Flaxseed is a commonly used ingredient known for its positive impact on digestive health and potential to alleviate constipation. Additionally, flaxseed has been found to have cholesterol-lowering properties, particularly in reducing total blood cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, which in turn may help lower the risk of heart disease.
To incorporate flax seeds into your diet, they can be consumed either in their raw or roasted form. However, it is advisable to roast flax seeds on low heat to preserve their nutritional content. Both raw and roasted flax seeds offer numerous benefits, and including them in your daily routine can contribute to overall well-being and the prevention of various diseases.
Flax seeds are particularly beneficial for females as they help regulate the length between ovulation and menstruation. They can also enhance fertility by increasing the chances of conception and aid in maintaining hormonal balance. Furthermore, flax seeds have shown potential benefits in managing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
When it comes to the recommended daily intake of flaxseed, there are no specific guidelines. However, consuming 1-2 tablespoons per day is generally considered a healthy amount. A single tablespoon of ground flaxseed provides around 37 calories and contains approximately 2 grams of polyunsaturated fat, which includes beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains 0.5 gram of monounsaturated fat and 2 grams of dietary fiber, offering a nutritious addition to your diet.
Now, let me share a delicious flaxseed soup recipe that my family and I enjoy. To prepare this recipe, you will require the following ingredients:
- 4 tablespoons of roasted flaxseed powder
- 4 medium-sized tomatoes (paste)
- 1 tablespoon of ginger and garlic paste
- 2 tablespoons of mustard oil or refined oil
- 1 teaspoon of black mustard seeds
- 1 bay leaf
- 1-inch cinnamon stick
- ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
- ½ teaspoon of cumin powder
- ½ teaspoon of red chili powder
- 1/3 teaspoon of garam masala
- Salt to taste
How to prepare the flaxseed soup?
Begin by roasting the flax seeds on medium heat until they start to splutter. Once roasted, let them cool down and then grind them into a fine powder using a blender or mixer.
Heat a pan and add oil. Allow the oil to heat up, then add the bay leaf, cinnamon stick, and black mustard seeds. Let them sizzle for a moment. Next, add the ginger and garlic paste and fry until it turns slightly brown.
Add the tomato paste, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt according to your taste. Mix well and cook with the lid on until the tomatoes and spices are thoroughly fried. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Once the masala mixture is well-cooked and begins to release oil, add two cups of water and bring it to a boil. Adjust the consistency according to your preference, whether you prefer a thick or thin soup.
Turn off the heat and let the soup cool down slightly. Then, add the four tablespoons of roasted flaxseed powder and mix well.
Serve the flaxseed soup hot and enjoy it with rice or as desired.
