One of my tuition students was genuinely surprised to learn that popcorn can be made at home in just 5 to 10 minutes. She was so enthusiastic about the idea that she wanted to see it done live! When I jokingly asked if she would like to see a food demonstration without fire, she laughed and shared a funny story about how her mom once tried to make popcorn in the microwave, only to burn it completely. This made everyone, including the other kids, burst into laughter. It’s moments like these that inspire me to share this guide on making delicious popcorn at home.

Making popcorn at home is a quick and easy process that yields a delicious and satisfying snack. Here's what you'll need:

Ingredients:

  • Popcorn Kernel( dry corn or you can say seed of corn) : Look for a bag specifically labeled "popcorn" at the grocery store .
  • Oil: butter, Coconut, olive, or refined oil,mustard oil all work well. You only need a thin layer to coat the bottom of the pot. 
  • Salt (to taste): Seasoning is key!
  • Optional: Melted butter or your favorite spices for extra flavor.

Utensils:

  • Pot with a lid: A heavy-bottomed pot works best for even heat distribution.
  • Stovetop

Instructions:

  • Heat the oil: Pour about 2-3 tablespoons of oil into your pot and heat it over medium-high heat. Here's a neat trick to test if the oil is hot enough: Add a few. If they pop within 30 seconds, the oil is ready.
  • Add the: Once the oil is hot, add around 1/3 cup of popcorn . Don't overcrowd the pot, or the kernels won't pop evenly.
  • Listen for the pops! Cover the pot with the lid and listen for the  popping.  Shake the pot occasionally (using a pot holder!) to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.
  • Reduce heat (optional): As the popping slows down significantly (with a few seconds between pops), you can reduce the heat slightly to prevent burning.
  • Almost done: When the popping almost completely stops, remove the pot from the heat. There may be a few stubborn that continue to pop, that's fine.
  • Season and enjoy! Pour the popcorn Kernel into a large bowl and season with salt to taste. You can also add melted butter, nutritional yeast, or your favorite spices for extra flavor.
